For so long, Cuba and Mexico due to their consistent troubles, couldn’t see the potential their duo holds. However now, they have decided to turn their miseries around. With their support toward each other breaking all the barriers we can easily see a regional alliance in making which can blow the USA out of the Caribbean.
On 12th February 2023, Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel arrived in Mexico where he was awarded Mexico’s highest medal in honouring Cuba-Mexico relations. President expressed gratitude towards Mexico for their solidarity with the Cuban people during these difficult times. But, one major announcement has the power to leave the White House baffled and puzzled.
A Major Announcement
Mexico has announced that it will lead a movement to remove the US blockade of Cuba, in place since the 1960s. Reportedly, Obrador said, “We will continue to demand the lifting of the blockade from Cuba, it is inhumane… I propose to [Cuban] President Miguel Diaz-Canel that Mexico lead a more active movement, that all countries unite, and that Cuba’s independence and sovereignty be protected”.

The Historic Relation
Well, Mexico and Cuba are brotherly nations. They are closely intertwined with each other in the fields of culture, education, and commerce, with Mexican companies investing in various industries in Cuba.
The two countries have also worked together in regional organisations such as the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) and the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America (ALBA). Both of these organisations focus on keeping the US out of the region. Not only soft-diplomacy, Mexico and Cuba also stood together during the time of cold war. Example being The Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962.
Adolfo López Mateos, the former President of Mexico, publicly opposed the US threat of invasion against Cuba and advocated for a peaceful resolution to the crisis. The crisis profoundly impacted Mexico, making it one of the countries that suffered the most from the US-Cuba standoff. Mexico’s efforts to promote peace and stability in the region were complicated by the fact that it was a close ally of the United States, but also had strong cultural and historical ties to Cuba.

Since then, the relations between the USA and Mexico never got back to normal. The already troublesome relationship got strained in recent years due to a number of factors, including differences on trade, immigration, and border security.
Migration Crisis
The recent tensions have been focused on immigration and border security. Even recently, the Biden administration announced to deport thousands of migrants into Mexico as the US is unable to handle the brunt of rising migrants.
Now, it is disheartening to see that the USA is using Mexico as a mere storage space. Whereas, Cuban migrants are also being hounded by the USA to avoid entering into America. This is the primal reason Mexico-Cuba are conjoining with each other.
At this point of time, what the future of migrants holds between Cuba-Mexico is unknown. But, AMLO’s oath is making it sure that troubles for the Biden administration are about to increase. Such developments make us wonder how Biden and the US administration keep digging deeper holes for themselves.
