CARICOM Crashes Henry’s ‘Premature Demand’

Haiti has been plagued by political instability and gang violence since the assassination of former President Jovenel Moise in 2021. The gangs have taken over much of the country, leading to frequent gun battles with police.

In an attempt to counter public sentiment against him, current President Ariel Henry proposed a military intervention, which was rejected by CARICOM. Minister of Foreign and Caricom Affairs, Dr. Amery Browne, stated that a special mission would be sent to Haiti to speak with all parties, but sending troops was premature. The 44th Regular Conference of Caricom Heads of Government had resolved on this matter in their recent meeting.

“A key decision taken by our heads of government in The Bahamas was the decision to launch a special mission to Haiti to have preliminary meetings with a number of key stakeholders.”

He said that Canadians would also take part in the Caricom-Canada mission to meet stakeholders in Haiti, who might also attend a subsequent meeting in Jamaica. The mission’s objective, according to Browne, is to address the situation in Haiti as soon as possible.

Initially, Ariel Henry begged for help from the US and even Canada. He tried to outsmart the foreign nations by demanding military intervention so that he can evade the political crisis ongoing in the country. He thought that military intervention would save his chair.

Recently, Canada, prior to trying to blame Europe for the debacle, attempted to obstruct the Haitian debacle through a sanctions regime. But none of the methods worked. Now that Canada is completely fed up, it is at the Caribbean’s door to enter Haiti with approval and legitimacy.

Canada and the United States provided tactical and armored vehicles and other supplies in October after Haiti urged the international community to send in a “specialized armed force.” However, these measures have not worked out.

Therefore, with nothing and nobody coming to Ariel Henry’s rescue, the Prime Minister went to CARICOM for help but alas his last hopes have also been shot down.
