Raghunath Mandir Jammu – Guide

Raghunath Mandir Jammu consists of a complex of seven Hindu temples, each with its own shikhara. It is known as the one of the largest temple complexes in North India. It is located in Jammu in Jammu and Kashmir. The temple walls are decorated with 300 well-crafted images of deities. The paintings in the 15 panels of the main temple are based on subjects like Ramayana, Mahabharata, etc.

History of this Temple

After 1765, during the reign of the rulers of the Jammu Shivaliks, there was a spurt of temple building activity in the Jammu region, which continued into the early 19th century. The temple was built by the order of Maharaja Ranjit Singh during the period 1822–1860, while Jammu was under his administration by Maharaja Gulab Singh.

The shrine complex of the Raghunath Mandir Jammu houses many deities, but the presiding deity is Rama, an incarnation of Vishnu. Mughal architectural influence is seen in all the spiral-shaped towers, which are gilded except for the tower of the main temple, which is said to be in the Sikh architectural style.
