Brazil sanctions: It is widely observed that smaller nations generally try to be in the good books of the West. They stay away from any kind of conflict of interest with these developed and powerful nations as much as possible in order to avoid trouble.

But it appears that Brazil has chosen to go in a different direction. Notwithstanding prior warnings, the president of Brazil recently acted against American interests.

On 26th February two Iranian ships docked in Brazil. The supply ship Makran and the Iranian Navy frigate Dena are attempting to circumnavigate the globe. They came to Brazil on with the intention of restocking before moving on to the Panama Canal.

Previously, the US  had asked Brazil to deny them the permission to dock, citing exclusive US restrictions against Tehran.

Yet, Brazil allowed the Iranian ships to land at the Rio de Janerio Port as anti-American sentiments in the region are on the rise. This comes in the backdrop of Tehran sending warships to Latin America last month.  Iran has concentrated on sending soldiers to the area. It has close ties to anti-American governments, particularly in Venezuela.

Ted Cruz, a senator from the United States, is furious about Brazil’s actions against Western interests. Brazil is being threatened by him for defying American objectives.

Washington keeps spreading the diseases of destabilization and instability in geopolitics. Earlier, the US targeted Iran, this time Brazil is on its target.

“These Iranian warships are already sanctioned, and so the port in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) where they docked is now at risk of crippling sanctions, as are any Brazilian companies that provided them services or accepted payments – and so are all foreign companies that entangle themselves with the port or those Brazilian companies in the future,” Cruz said in a statement.

The senator emphasized that US anti-terrorism laws are “not optional” and urged President Joe Biden to “impose applicable sanctions” and reassess if Brazil is cooperating with Washington sufficiently. He even urged that the congress should compel the administration to censure Brazil.

Cruz stated that Biden either did not transmit American concerns while receiving Lula at the White House, or the Brazilians “did not care,” that Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva was “aligned against the US and our interests.”

It is evident that the US perceives Lula da Silva, the newly elected president of Brazil, as a danger to its hegemony.

But even if the US imposes sanctions on Brazil, they will not have any major implications.

Because now Brazil has the diplomatic, political and economic backing of many powerful countries which can easily kill the US’ malicious plot in Latin America.
