Anti-NATO protests in Australia

After Last week’s Anti-NATO protests that erupted in four crucial nations of the world where even several Americans were seen protesting against NATO, the Anti-NATO heat has now arrived in the land of Oz.

Large-scale demonstrations and Anti-NATO protests in Australia erupted in support of Vladimir Putin, the president of Russia. Cities including Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Brisbane, and Perth saw demonstrations on the streets. Many pro-Putin demonstrators demonstrated against the Australian government for aiding Ukraine militarily in its conflict with Russia while holding placards that read, “#IStandWithRussia”. In addition to asking why Australian citizens should pay for US goals, demonstrators requested that NATO forces be withdrawn from Russia’s borders, according to TASS. The protesters want NATO forces removed from Russia’s borders.

In the backdrop of all this, Australians are feeling the sting of inflation and rising interest rates and could soon face a recession.

The main source of Australia’s economic problems is either skyrocketing inflation or an increase in the cost of living. The inflation rate was 7.8% as of the most recent check.

The cost of living is rising by 9.1% according to the National Accounts, which measures inflation using the GDP “price deflator” as well. Inflation has decreased to 7.4%, according to official monthly inflation figures, which is more volatile.

For workers, the fact that wage growth appears to be absolutely stagnating just makes matters worse.

According to ABS Business Indicators, which were published last month, wages and salaries increased 2.6% seasonally adjusted in the December quarter, which is significantly less than the 3.3% reported in the most recent Wage Price Index.

Most workers are having a difficult time keeping up with rising prices, declining purchasing power, and increasing mortgage and interest payments. And the official economic numbers reflect the economic misery.

Australian PM Anthony Albanese has been a vocal NATO supporter and has supported sanctioning Russia and aiding Ukraine. But Australians are more concerned about the economy and inflation, urging him to prioritize domestic issues. There are predictions of a recession in 2023 for Australia, with potential increases in unemployment and cash shortages. It remains to be seen whether PM Albanese will prioritize domestic concerns or continue to push his pro-Western agenda.
