After Finland, Sweden becomes the Next NATO Victim

Heads up, folks! Swedish authorities are sounding the alarm, urging citizens to up their game in war readiness.

Cast your minds back to May 2022 when Sweden and its Nordic buddy, Finland, broke the neutrality mould by deciding to jump on the NATO bandwagon. The trigger? Russia’s invasion of Ukraine earlier that year. Finland wasted no time, officially becoming a NATO member in April 2023. However, Sweden faced a rocky road to join the club.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan threw a wrench in the works, accusing Sweden of dragging its feet on tackling Islamophobia and dubbing it a “red line.” That’s like saying, “Sort out your issues at home before you join our club.” Meanwhile, Hungary also chimed in with concerns about Sweden’s potential NATO membership, adding a bit more drama to the mix. So, buckle up, Sweden – it seems the path to NATO is not a walk in the park.

Guess what, folks? Erdoğan finally gave Sweden’s NATO entry a thumbs up, but hold your horses – the Turkish Grand National Assembly still needs to nod in agreement. Meanwhile, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán decided to play it cool, saying his country isn’t rushing to give Sweden the green light.

Erdogan to put Sweden’s NATO ratification to Turkish parliament in autumn

Now, enter NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg, who spilled the beans to the German news agency DPA last week. According to him, Sweden has dotted all the i’s and crossed all the t’s, and he’s betting on the country becoming NATO’s 32nd member by the next summit in July, set to go down in Washington, D.C.

What’s in it for NATO? Well, if Sweden makes the cut, it’s a game-changer for the regional dynamics. Picture this – with Sweden on board, all five Nordic nations would practically rule the roost over “NATO Lake,” a fancy term for the Baltic Sea’s strategic hotspot. And here’s the kicker: the military airpower Sweden brings to the table would give Russian forces in the sea a run for their money. Brace yourselves, because if all goes as planned, Sweden’s entry into NATO is about to make waves – literally.

And it seems that the ripple effect has already kicked in.

Vladimir Putin, Russia’s leader with a penchant for shirtless horseback riding, has issued a warning: “NATO, stay out of our neighborhood.” But Sweden, apparently tired of being a neutral wallflower, is ready to dance with danger.

Top Swedish officials have urged the country’s citizens to prepare for a potential war, amid rising tensions with Moscow. The statements were made at the Folk och Forsvar National Conference in Salen.

In a speech on Sunday, Foreign Minister Tobias Billstrom warned that “Russia will constitute a serious threat to the security of Sweden and Europe for the foreseeable future.” He added that Stockholm “must be realistic and assume – and be prepared for – a drawn-out confrontation.”

Moscow has stated that NATO’s continuing expansion towards Russia’s western borders, as well as the refusal to rule out Ukrainian membership in the future, are among the key causes of the ongoing conflict. Russia sees NATO as a threat to national security.

Russian Chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov has accused the West of turning Europe into an “arena for confrontation.” The accession of Finland and Sweden will “have a negative impact on the situation in Europe,” he warned.

Moscow has also stated that the deliveries of weapons and money to Kiev make NATO countries de facto participants in the conflict.

Sweden is warned to ‘brace for war’

Now, I’m no expert, but is Putin bluffing? He says NATO moving closer is a big no-no, violating Russia’s national security. Remember the Monroe Doctrine? Yeah, it’s like that, but with missiles.

So, as Sweden contemplates its future in the cool kids’ club of NATO, one can’t help but wonder if they’re really ready for the chaos that comes with it. Is it about security, or is it just a case of FOMO on global military escapades? Only time will tell if Sweden’s decision is a stroke of genius or a recipe for disaster.

Well, it’s common knowledge, and everyone is witnessing Russia’s displeasure towards Finland following its NATO membership.

Finland, typically known for its tranquil stance, has recently stirred the waters by engaging in discussions about potentially joining NATO. This departure from its longstanding neutrality drew a chilling warning from Putin.

During an interview, Putin stated that there were no pre-existing issues with Finland, but he ominously predicted trouble on the horizon. His plan? The creation of the Leningrad Military District, concentrating specific military formations there.

Now, it appears Sweden might be treading a similar path to Finland’s. Here’s the scoop: Putin has issued a threat to Sweden, leading Swedish officials to instruct their citizens to start preparing for a potential war. The stage is set, and the drama is set to unfold once again.
