North Korean leader Kim Jong-un recently participated in a training exercise alongside his troops, as reported by the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA). The exercise featured a newly developed battle tank and was characterized as a “training match” aimed at evaluating the combat readiness of tank crews and acquainting them with various tactical scenarios. According to KCNA, the showcased tank, hailed by Kim as “the world’s most powerful,” was the focal point of the exercise.

Accompanied by Defense Minister Kang Sun Nam and other high-ranking officials, Kim observed as tank units navigated through simulated combat environments. Throughout the training, the tanks showcased precision in their maneuvers and engaged targets with live fire.

“Swiftly weaving their way through [the] worst combat circumstances, heavy tanks hit targets at once with powerful strikes and broke through strong defense lines with high maneuverability,” the report claimed.

According to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), Kim Jong-un expressed “great satisfaction” with the performance of the battle tank during its inaugural demonstration and urged increased efforts to prepare for potential conflict. KCNA reported that Kim personally drove one of the tanks during the drills, which, as per KCNA, enhanced the morale of the tank crews within the North Korean army. KCNA indicated that the exercise involved units positioned near the border, within reach of what was described as “the enemy’s capital,” referring to Seoul. These training maneuvers coincided with the annual military exercises conducted by the United States and South Korea off the Korean Peninsula, slated to conclude on Thursday. Kim Jong-un has criticized these joint exercises as a “rehearsal” for an invasion of North Korea and a provocation of war.

Reportedly spanning 11 days, this year’s joint exercises, involving double the number of troops compared to the previous year, primarily aim to deter North Korea’s nuclear threats. According to Lee Sung-jun, a spokesperson for Seoul’s Joint Chiefs of Staff, the drills encompass live-fire exercises, bombing runs, air assaults, and missile interception operations.

North Korea’s Defense Ministry recently issued a strong condemnation of the joint military exercises conducted by the United States and South Korea. The ministry labeled the exercises as “reckless” in a statement released via the ruling party newspaper Rodong Sinmun. Pyongyang characterized the drills as a “further escalation of military threats” and accused them of constituting “an invasion attempt” against North Korea’s sovereignty. Conversely, Seoul has portrayed the exercises as solely defensive in nature.
