French President Emmanuel Macron has recently cast doubt on the potential for his former American counterpart to secure reelection to the White House. He made these comments in response to inquiries about who could potentially facilitate peace talks between Russia and Ukraine.

Macron described Moscow as “an adversary” but refrained from labeling it as an “enemy” during an interview with France 2 and TF1 TV channels. Additionally, he did not dismiss the possibility of NATO deployments in Ukraine and emphasized France’s readiness to take necessary actions to prevent Russia from achieving victory. Macron also indicated a lack of current opportunities for negotiations with the Kremlin, highlighting the complexities and challenges surrounding diplomatic efforts in the region.

“I am absolutely ready for discussions at any time, but we need someone sincere and peace-oriented to do that”, Macron stated, expressing hope for future negotiations with a Russian president. Interviewers questioned if the US could mediate talks, especially if Trump is reelected.

“As far as I’m informed, I don’t think Donald Trump will become President of the United States,” the French leader claimed.

Macron clarified that his reluctance to engage with Putin directly was not personal, as he previously had significant discussions with him. He mentioned his philosophy of working with elected leaders, regardless of personal preferences.

US President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump are poised for a rematch in November. Recent polls indicate Trump leads Biden by two to nine points. Trump pledged to resolve the Ukrainian conflict swiftly if reelected, while Russia is holding its presidential election this weekend, where Vladimir Putin confronts three opponents.
