Slovakia’s ‘Gas Card’ Puts Ukraine in a Tight Spot
Share on FacebookShare on X

In the arena of Geopolitics, there have been countless times when the CIA stooge in Ukraine, Zelensky has been bashed, insulted and humiliated on the global scale.

Several European allies like Hungary and even Germany has been seen questioning and diverting themselves from the Ukrainian drama. However, it has never been seen that Ukraine was seething due to shenanigans. But, tables have turned.

Bratislava has punched Ukraine where it is hurting Kyiv the most. With Fico controlling Ukraine’s electric grid, Kyiv is caught in a trap: the more they push back, the darker their wartime nights might get.

ZELENSKY FUMES AT FICO’S THREAT

According to media reports, Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico has been accused by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of launching a “second energy front” against Kyiv on Moscow’s orders, intensifying the already tense conflict over Russian gas supplies to Europe.

Several European nations, including Slovakia, Moldova, and Hungary, receive Russian natural gas through Ukraine. However, when a current transit agreement that was signed prior to Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine expires at the end of the year, it is anticipated to stop the flow.

Fico, who traveled to Moscow earlier this week to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin, stated on Friday that if Kyiv stops the transfers on January 1, Slovakia would take retaliatory action against Ukraine, including stopping backup power supplies.

Zelensky, who is currently in a difficult situation, has begun to cry on social media as a result. In a post on X on Saturday, Zelenskyy expressed his desperation by writing, “It seems that Putin gave Fico the order to open the second energy front against Ukraine at the expense of the Slovak people’s interests.”

This comes as Robert Fico, the prime minister of Slovakia, has threatened to take retaliatory action against Ukraine if Kyiv halts the transit of Russian gas to Slovakia on January 1.

SLOVAKIA THREATENS POWER CUT

When the current contract expires at the end of this year, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated last week that his government “would not prolong the transit of Russian gas.” Zelenskyy charged Fico with using Russian natural gas purchases to assist Russian President Vladimir Putin in funding his invasion of Ukraine.

In a video released on Facebook Friday, Fico stated, “We will take into account the circumstances and the potential for reciprocal actions against Ukraine after January 1.” “If it is unavoidable, we will stop the supply of electricity, which Ukraine urgently needs in the event of grid failures,” he stated.

For those who don’t know, Slovakia insists on Russian gas via Ukraine, citing costlier alternatives and a €500M loss in transit fees. Kyiv refuses new transit deals amid war, relying on imported power after Russian strikes crippled its grid in 2022.

Though Russian gas now supplies under 10% of EU imports (down from 40% in 2021), Eastern Europe stays heavily reliant.

Zelenskyy noted Slovakia provides 19% of Ukraine’s power imports, with Kyiv seeking stronger EU ties. However, Slovakia’s government under Robert Fico has changed the tone of approach with Ukraine.

SLOVAKIA TAKES U-TURN ON UKRAINE

Slovakia has donated a significant amount of military hardware to Ukraine, is a member of both NATO and the European Union, and was one of the few European nations advocating for strict EU sanctions against Russia.

But under Fico, who has repeated the fallacious justification offered by Russian President Vladimir Putin for his invasion, this is probably going to change. Fico has accused “Ukrainian Nazis and fascists” of inciting Putin to launch the invasion.

Fico became a close ally of Hungarian Prime Minister Victor Orban during his time in opposition, particularly when it came to criticizing the EU. There are rumors that Fico and Orban might band together to put up barriers for Brussels if he regains power.

Fico has refrained from joining the West’s pro-Ukraine and anti-Russia bandwagon. After winning the parliamentary election last year, Fico halted deliveries of weapons to Ukraine and called for a diplomatic resolution of the conflict. And this has particularly left Zelensky obnoxious.
