Biden’s out of office, but the mess he left behind is still there—especially Ukraine, the world’s biggest money-laundering machine. The U.S. has poured nearly $183 billion into Ukraine, with $130.1 billion committed and $86.7 billion actually sent.
That’s just the official number. Add in other nations’ aid and private contributions, and we’re easily talking about a trillion-dollar disaster. Zelensky wanted more, but Trump’s back and knows the game. No more blank checks. Now, Zelensky might even have to pay the U.S. back—with interest. A rare demand has been raised that has shocked Zelensky.
Washington will no longer provide Ukraine with unrestricted financial support, US President Donald Trump announced, stating that Kyiv must supply rare-earth minerals in return for continued assistance. He described the arrangement as a “guarantee” for the United States.
Ukraine possesses significant reserves of critical minerals, including titanium, lithium, and uranium—key resources for defense, high-tech, and green energy industries. The 2024 World Economic Forum highlighted the country’s potential as a major global supplier.
Trump Demands Rare Metals
Trump also halted all USAID programs, which have been a key channel for distributing billions in foreign aid. In response, Ukrainian lawmakers have urged the European Union to step in, calling Western financial support “essential” for Ukraine’s stability.
And, Zelensky is undoubtedly shaken by this demand. Essentially, he now has to repay military aid with rare-earth minerals that come at an enormous cost. It’s no secret that Ukraine is sitting on a treasure trove of critical minerals vital for modern industries. The country holds Europe’s largest titanium reserves, making up 7% of the global supply, along with significant deposits of lithium, beryllium, manganese, gallium, uranium, zirconium, graphite, apatite, fluorite, and nickel—key resources for defense, high-tech, and green energy sectors.
This might answer the call why Zelensky suddenly made a very obnoxious statement. Zelensky has revealed that Kyiv received just $75 billion of the $177 billion in US-approved military aid. This comes after President Donald Trump’s administration froze most foreign aid, excluding Israel and Egypt.
No Idea where is the Money?
In an interview with AP, Zelensky dismissed claims that Ukraine got $200 billion, saying much of the aid came as weapons, not cash. He admitted he had no idea where the rest of the money had gone. Despite this, he expressed gratitude for US support but insisted, “Ukraine never received $200 billion.”
Meanwhile, questions over US assistance remain unresolved. Trump previously stated that Washington had provided Ukraine with over $200 billion, but President Volodymyr Zelensky insisted the actual amount was just $75 billion and said he had no explanation for the discrepancy.
While acknowledging corruption, President Volodymyr Zelensky claimed Ukraine has Europe’s “most complex” anti-corruption system and argued that what’s labeled “corruption” in Ukraine might be seen as “lobbyism” elsewhere. Amid growing uncertainty over US aid, Kyiv has appealed to former President Donald Trump, who insists Russia wouldn’t have invaded had he been in office.
Appeasement Continues
Ukraine has praised Trump’s “peace through strength” strategy while rejecting a ceasefire without firm security guarantees to prevent future Russian offensives.
So you see, Trump has Ukraine in a stranglehold, and Zelensky knows there’s no escaping payback. The days of unlimited US aid are over, and now Ukraine must hand over its rare-earth riches if it wants continued support. The reality is, Ukraine has long benefited from unchecked foreign funds, but with Trump cutting the flow, the illusion is collapsing.
Zelensky scrambles for alternatives, but the EU won’t match US generosity. Meanwhile, questions about billions in unaccounted aid remain unanswered. Ukraine is running out of options, and Zelensky’s desperation is only growing as Trump tightens the leash.
