A far-left terrorist group from Greece praised the “heroic resistance” of Palestinians as it claimed two bomb attacks in central Athens, the Media reported on Sunday.

The group, called Revolutionary Class Struggle, posted a long statement on the Indymedia website. They took responsibility for a bomb that exploded near the Hellenic Train offices on Friday. They also claimed they planted another bomb near the Labor Ministry on February 3, 2024.

In their statement, they blamed Greece for helping what they called the “American-Zionist genocidal war in Palestine.”

The two blasts caused only property damage. No one was hurt. In both cases, the group warned local media about the bombs about 40 minutes before the explosions.

Attacks on government offices and banks are common in Greece. Such attacks are often done by extreme-left and anarchist groups.

The group also criticized the government’s response to big protests earlier this year. The explosion also came during widespread public anger over a 2023 railway disaster, Greece’s worst, in which 57 people were killed and dozens more injured when a freight train and a passenger train heading in opposite directions were accidentally put on the same track.

In the statement, the group said the government and its “domestic and foreign bosses” are trying to create a “fascist-style regime.” They accused the government of many things: bad handling of the pandemic, spying on citizens, state violence, and turning Greece into an American military base with help from Israel.

In November, Israel’s Foreign Ministry told its citizens in Greece to stay away from the Israeli embassy. They also asked people to avoid showing Israeli or Jewish symbols in public. This was before extreme-left and pro-Palestinian protests, which later became violent.

The protests were linked to the anniversary of the 1973 Athens Polytechnic uprising, a student movement against the military government in Greece.

In mid-February, two Israelis were stabbed on Ermou Street, a popular shopping area in Athens. One of the attackers was from Gaza and was caught. The other escaped.

Israel’s Foreign Ministry said the arrested attacker had joined pro-Palestinian protests before.

Israel has not raised its travel warning for Greece. The alert remains at level two, meaning “Potential Threat.” Israelis visiting Greece are asked to be extra careful.
