A new poll shows that nearly 90% of Ukrainians do not trust US President Donald Trump. The survey was done by Info Sapiens for the New Europe Center (NEC), a think tank in Kyiv. It was released to mark Trump’s first 100 days back in office. According to the poll, 89% of Ukrainians said they do not have faith in Trump. Only 7.4% said they do trust him.
Back in November 2024, before Trump began his second term, things were different. At that time, 44.6% of Ukrainians said they trusted Trump. Around 47.2% said they did not. The NEC said Trump’s higher score then was due to disappointment with President Joe Biden’s weak support for Ukraine. Trump had also promised to end the war quickly by negotiating peace between Ukraine and Russia.
However, since Trump returned to office, things have changed. His current approach has upset many Ukrainians. The NEC said his actions seem to support Russia more than international law. Trump has criticized both Ukraine and Russia. However, he has blamed Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky for the war. During a meeting in the White House in February, Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance got into a shouting match with Zelensky. They accused him of being ungrateful for US help. They also said he was risking a world war during Zelensky’s visit to Washington.
Trump has refused to give Ukraine security guarantees. Instead, he is pressuring Kyiv to sign a peace deal that would benefit the US This deal would let the US use Ukraine’s natural resources. Reports say the deal would also recognize Russian control over Crimea. It would freeze the war along the current front line. Russia would keep control of parts of four Ukrainian regions. Ukraine would not be allowed to join NATO. Sanctions on Russia would be removed in steps.
Russia has said peace is only possible if Ukraine gives up its land claims and ends its NATO plans. Ukraine has rejected this idea.
