The escalating feud between Donald Trump and Elon Musk has reached a new peak with Trump’s scathing dismissal of Musk’s newly announced America Party. Trump’s reaction to Musk’s political ambitions has been swift and withering, with Trump publicly branding Musk’s new political venture as “ridiculous,” “absurd,” and the product of someone who has gone “off the rails”.

From Alliance to Adversaries

The rupture between Trump and Musk was triggered by a fundamental disagreement over Trump’s “big, beautiful” tax and spending bill, which Musk denounced as fiscally reckless and a recipe for national bankruptcy.

Musk’s criticism was not limited to policy; he accused both major parties of being complicit in government waste, calling the U.S. a “one-party system” that fails to represent true democracy.

This public break culminated in Musk’s resignation from DOGE and his subsequent announcement on X of the formation of the America Party, which he framed as a direct challenge to the entrenched two-party system.

Trump’s Counteroffensive

Trump’s response has been swift and scathing. He has repeatedly dismissed Musk’s America Party as doomed to fail, arguing that the U.S. political system is fundamentally designed for two parties and that third parties only create “confusion, disruption, and chaos”. “Third parties have never worked. So he can have fun with it, but I think it’s ridiculous,” Trump told reporters, reinforcing his belief that Musk’s efforts are futile. On his Truth Social platform, Trump further lamented Musk’s trajectory, stating, “I am saddened to watch Elon Musk go completely ‘off the rails,’ essentially becoming a TRAIN WRECK over the past five weeks”.

Trump also took aim at Musk’s business interests, particularly his advocacy for electric vehicle mandates and the reliance of Tesla and SpaceX on federal contracts and subsidies.

He accused Musk of turning on him because the new spending bill cuts green energy credits, and even threatened to withdraw government support from Musk’s companies.

Musk’s Retort and the Broader Stakes

Musk, for his part, has hit back at Trump’s attacks, using his social media reach to mock Trump’s Truth Social platform and reiterate his commitment to breaking the “Republican/Democrat Uniparty”. He has positioned the America Party as a necessary disruption, arguing that the two-party system perpetuates waste and corruption, and that Americans deserve a true alternative.

Musk has also indicated that the America Party’s immediate focus will be on influencing key Senate and House races, rather than mounting a nationwide presidential campaign.

The Political and Electoral Implications

The Trump-Musk feud is more than a personal spat; it exposes deep fractures within the American political landscape. Trump’s aggressive efforts to delegitimize Musk’s third-party challenge reflect both the threat it poses to Republican electoral strategy and the broader anxiety within the two major parties about rising anti-establishment sentiment.

While Trump insists that third parties are destined for irrelevance, Musk’s wealth, public profile, and digital influence make the America Party a wildcard in the run-up to the 2026 midterm elections and beyond.

Trump’s fresh attack on Musk, marked by ridicule and warnings of “chaos,” underscores the volatility of political alliances in an era of populist disruption. Whether Musk’s America Party can truly break the two-party hold or simply becomes another footnote in the long history of American third-party experiments remains to be seen.

What is clear is that this feud has already reshaped the landscape of American political debate, with both men staking their reputations on the outcome of this high-stakes contest.
