The insurgent group in the Tigray region, TPLF, has come to the table as they accept peace talks proposed by the African Union. If this meeting takes place, it would be the first formal negotiation between TPLF and the Ethiopian Government since the inception of war in November 2020. Nearly six million Tigray people are held hostage by the TPLF warlords as a bargaining chip in order to continue ruling the Tigray Region.

Both parties have agreed before to participate in AU mediated peace talks but talks could not be arranged successfully as fighting never really stopped across Tigray region. The Peace talks are to be held in Africa’s southernmost country named South Africa. The NSA of Ethiopia tweeted on the matter saying that it has accepted the invitation for the talks but the talks needed to be without any preconditions.

The Ethiopian government “has accepted this invitation which is in line with our principled position regarding the peaceful resolution of the conflict and the need to have talks without preconditions,” Redwan Hussein, the national security adviser to Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, said on Twitter.

The TPLF getting ready for peace talks means that the military assault by Eritrea and Ethiopia has come to fruition. The swift surrender of the TPLF has come out as a shocker for the West as it didn’t calculate this sudden offensive move by Eritrea and Ethiopia together. The blitzkrieg by Eritrea and Ethiopia has pushed the TPLF to its knees as it is now not going to be the same TPLF which was better equipped than the Ethiopian government when the conflict started. The Tigray’s ethnic group which ruled Ethiopia for 27 years before the advent of Abiy Ahmed used its political power to amass arms and ammunition in its ethnic Tigray region.

There was a strategic importance of this amassing of arms in the Tigray region by the previous Tigray ethnicity dominated government. The government used it to consolidate its hold over the Tigray Region and would then use the Tigray region to wage a war afterwards if it is ousted from power.

The same happened when Abiy Ahmed came to power. TPLF spread the propaganda that the new government wants to eradicate Tigray people from the region and therefore the Ethiopian government launched an offensive  which is going till now.

The news about this conflict is hard to verify due to wide-range of disinformation campaigns as well as communication outages. However it is confirmed that the fresh plans by TPLF generals to quickly seize the strategic areas in the northern Amhara region failed miserably due to the resistance by joint forces of the local Amhara fighters and the Ethiopia National Defense forces.

This is a huge setback for the West as it will lose all its investment which it did for creating and holding TPLF on its own in the Horn of Africa region. The US wants to establish its presence in Ethiopia and Eritrea for controlling the region and it was succeeding in it. But the recent offensive by Eritrea and Ethiopia has proven as an example for other African nations to wipe out West’s undue influence from their respective countries.
