The Ottawa Board of Health is responsible for creating an inclusive environment within the city and ensuring that all residents feel welcome and respected. However, a recent letter sent to a board member shows that this is not the case.
The letter body shamed the board member due to her weight, which is unacceptable. The Board of Health needs to take responsibility and ensure that all residents are respected and treated equally. “As a member of the Ottawa Board of Health, citizens expect you to be a role model for our city’s residents and believe (sic) you cannot fulfil that role due to your unhealthy status………..” the letter to Banham reads.

The Board of Health must take this incident as an opportunity to create a safe and inclusive environment. The letter to Banham is a clear example of body shaming and is simply unacceptable.
The Board of Health must demonstrate an understanding of the damaging effects of body shaming, and take steps to ensure that all residents are respected and treated equally. The Board of Health must also work to create an environment where those who are body shamed or discriminated against can feel comfortable speaking out.
