The US government’s push to provide cluster bombs to Ukraine has encountered unexpected resistance from its European allies. Germany, the United Kingdom, and Spain have all expressed their objections, highlighting a clear lack of consensus and raising doubts about the decision-making process within the US establishment.

Days after the US decision of arming Ukraine with the controversial cluster munitions stirred the storm, Germany has rejected the prospect of sending deadly bombs to Ukraine.

To quote German foreign minister, Annalena Baerbock, “I have followed the media reports. For us, as a state party, the Oslo agreement applies”. German Foreign Minister Boris Pistorius also shared a similar stance on the situation, Tass reported.

“Germany has signed the convention, so it is no option for us. As for those countries that have not signed the convention – China, Russia, Ukraine, and the US – it is not up to me to support their actions,” the German Defence Minister said at a press conference.

Likewise, UK PM Rishi Sunak said that the British administration also ‘discourages’ the use of cluster bombs. The premier noted that the United Kingdom is also a signatory to an international convention that bans the use of these bombs.

Sunak said, “We will continue to do our part to support Ukraine against Russia’s illegal and unprovoked invasion. But we’ve done that by providing heavy battle tanks and, most recently, long-range weapons,” The Guardian reported.

The Repercussions

The use of cluster bombs is internationally condemned, as evidenced by the Oslo agreement banning these weapons. Germany, the United Kingdom, and other signatories to the agreement are committed to upholding its principles.

The US decision to pursue the transfer of cluster bombs to Ukraine undermines the credibility of these nations in advocating for disarmament and adherence to international agreements.

By disregarding established norms and agreements, the United States itself is setting a dangerous precedent and weakening the international community’s efforts to prevent the use of indiscriminate and inhumane weapons.

Providing cluster bombs to a country that has not demonstrated a commitment to protecting its own civilian lives and minimizing collateral damage risks exacerbating the humanitarian crisis and escalating the conflict.

Honestly, Biden needs to consider the potential consequences of arming a nation with questionable behavior on the international stage. It is essential to prioritize the protection of civilian lives and the promotion of peaceful solutions over the pursuit of military escalation.

The Message

Moreover, these vehement objections from Germany and the United Kingdom indicate that the repercussions of deploying cluster bombs far outweigh any perceived benefits.

By potentially alienating key allies and undermining the principles they stand for, the US risks damaging crucial diplomatic relationships and weakening its global standing.

The international community, including the European Union, has consistently called for a peaceful resolution to the Russo-Ukraine conflicts, emphasizing dialogue, diplomacy, and adherence to international law.

The US, known for its ever-changing foreign policy stance, may eventually follow suit, leaving Ukraine vulnerable and isolated.

The consideration of cluster bombs as a military option against Russia in the Russo-Ukraine clashes represents a dangerous and ill-conceived approach. The strong opposition from Germany, the United Kingdom, and other nations demonstrates the potentially disastrous consequences of such a decision.

The United States should prioritize diplomatic efforts, seek peaceful resolutions, and focus on supporting Ukraine in ways that uphold international law and promote stability. Why on earth does Biden want mini-nukes to explode in Ukraine?
