The Polish Defense Ministry recently halted nearly all explosives-related military training due to five deaths this month. Two soldiers were killed by a TNT charge during an exercise. Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz has launched an immediate investigation into safety protocols and procedures within the Polish Army.

The Polish Defense Ministry has suspended training involving explosives and warfare agents, except for units preparing for missions abroad and training Ukrainian soldiers. This decision follows recent fatalities, including a soldier who died in an avalanche during mountain-warfare training in the Tatra mountains. Lt. Gen. Marek Sokolowski confirmed this incident at a press conference in Warsaw.

Earlier, two army engineers died in a TNT explosion during training in Silesia, as announced by Kosiniak-Kamysz. These deaths occurred after two soldiers were crushed by a tracked vehicle during a separate drill near Drawsko Pomorskie, unrelated to ongoing NATO exercises in northern Poland.

The Dragon-24 exercises included 20,000 soldiers and 3,500 units of equipment from 10 NATO countries, with around 15,000 soldiers from the Polish Armed Forces participating. This initiative is part of NATO’s broader Steadfast Defender 24 drills, which involve 90,000 troops from all 32 member states and will continue until May.

Steadfast Defender 24 marks NATO’s largest maneuver since the Cold War. The exercises simulate an armed confrontation with Russia, contributing to increased tensions globally, as noted by Russian Security Council Secretary Nikolay Patrushev earlier this month.

The Polish Defense Ministry’s suspension of explosives-related training reflects a critical response to recent fatalities, emphasizing safety measures and highlighting ongoing international military exercises amid heightened global tensions.
