Upheaval in Bangladesh By Jyotirmay Kaushal

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has resigned and left the capital, possibly even the country. Her current whereabouts are undisclosed but reports indicate that she has left Dhaka in a helicopter, accompanied by her sister. With some reports suggesting her destination to be Agartala, Tripura.

Bangladesh is undergoing one of the most critical moments in its history. Massive protests and student movements have logjammed the country for the past few weeks. Over 300 people have died and 1000+ arrested amidst the widespread violence spreading across the country.

Social media had been banned and forces had been deployed to control the agitating masses. But it seems to have made little impact on the amassing crowds. Protesters have even managed to storm the Prime Ministers palace. Scenes that have an eerie resemblance to the upheaval witnessed in Sri Lanka in 2022

Despite the reported resignation and departure of Sheikh Hasina, the protests continue to rage. Army Chief Waker uz Zaman has confirmed the resignation of the Prime Minister and has informed that an interim government will be taking over immediately. He has also called for the people to maintain peace and shun violence.

A number of journalists and media personnel have been the target of the violent mobs, even the press club has not been spared. Minority Hindu families have also been targeted, a hindu journalist and a hindu politican have been killed whilst temples too are under attack from the BNP led Islamist mobs.

In view of the deteriorating law and order conditions BSF has issued a high alert along the India-Bangladesh border. The BSF DG has also reached Kolkata.
