In a significant shift in U.S. foreign policy, President Donald Trump has reportedly warned Israel that continued military operations in Gaza could jeopardize American support. This development comes as Vice President JD Vance cancels a planned visit to Israel, citing concerns over the ongoing conflict.

As of May 20, 2025, Israel’s military operations in Gaza have intensified under the ongoing “Gideon’s Chariots” campaign. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) are executing a multifaceted strategy aimed at dismantling Hamas’ military and political infrastructure.

IDF forces have launched targeted ground operations in central and southern Gaza, focusing on expanding security zones and establishing a buffer between northern and southern regions. A significant achievement includes the recapture of the Netzarim Corridor, a strategic route dividing Gaza, which had been previously relinquished during earlier ceasefires. Additionally, the IDF has gained control over approximately 30% of Gaza’s territory, isolating key Hamas brigades and dismantling underground tunnel networks.

According to a report by the Washington Post, the Trump administration has conveyed to Israeli officials that persisting with its military actions in Gaza may risk losing U.S. backing. The warning underscores growing concerns within the American administration regarding the humanitarian and geopolitical consequences of the ongoing war in Gaza. The U.S. has been advocating for a ceasefire, a hostage release deal, and humanitarian aid to the region.

JD Vance Cancels Israel Visit

Vice President JD Vance, a staunch supporter of Israel, had initially planned a visit to the country. However, he decided to cancel the trip following Israel’s launch of a new large-scale military operation in Gaza, named “Gideon’s Chariots.” A senior U.S. official informed Axios that Vance’s decision was influenced by concerns that his presence might imply the Trump administration supports the Israeli initiative, which involves displacing two million Palestinians and significantly damaging Gaza.

Despite canceling his visit, Vance has been a vocal advocate for Israel’s right to defend itself. He has criticized the Biden administration for allegedly making it harder for Israel to achieve victory over Hamas, accusing Biden’s policies of unnecessarily prolonging the war. Vance has emphasized the importance of Israel ending the conflict swiftly to enable collaboration with Sunni Arab states against Iran.

The combination of Trump’s warning and Vance’s canceled visit signals a potential reevaluation of the U.S.-Israel alliance. While the U.S. has traditionally been a strong supporter of Israel, the current administration appears to be taking a more critical stance regarding Israel’s actions in Gaza. This shift could have significant implications for future U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East.

Meanwhile, Israel’s military objectives encompass the complete dismantling of Hamas’s operational capabilities, the retrieval of Israeli hostages, and the establishment of a secure perimeter to prevent future militant activities. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has emphasized the necessity of controlling all of Gaza to achieve these goals.

As the situation in Gaza continues to evolve, the international community watches closely to see how the U.S.-Israel relationship will develop in the coming months.
