India Blocks Elon Musk’s Starlink Approval Over illegal use in Iran war and National security concerns: Reports

India has reportedly put the final approval process for Elon Musk-owned Starlink on hold as security agencies review concerns linked to the satellite internet provider’s operations during the recent Iran conflict, according to a Bloomberg report.

The delay comes at a crucial stage for Starlink, which has been seeking regulatory clearances to launch commercial satellite broadband services in India, one of the world’s largest digital markets.

Security Agencies Review Starlink Risks

According to reports, Indian authorities have frozen the final approvals after concerns emerged over the alleged use of Starlink satellite terminals during the US-Israel-Iran conflict in the Middle East. The concerns have reportedly raised questions within New Delhi about India’s ability to regulate and control a foreign-based satellite communications provider during periods of geopolitical tension.

Government security agencies are said to be evaluating the implications of relying on a US-based operator for critical internet infrastructure, particularly in scenarios involving national security or military conflicts.

The concerns reportedly intensified after reports suggested that Starlink terminals were operational in Iran during the conflict despite the company not having an official license to provide services in the country.

Concerns Over Sovereign Control

Indian officials are reportedly worried about whether the government would be able to effectively oversee or restrict Starlink’s operations if geopolitical tensions escalate in the region or if India faces national security threats.

Satellite internet services operate differently from traditional telecom networks, as they rely on low-Earth orbit satellites and portable ground terminals. This has raised concerns among policymakers globally about regulatory oversight, surveillance, and operational control.

New Delhi is understood to be examining whether existing safeguards are sufficient to prevent unauthorized use of satellite communication infrastructure inside Indian territory.

Starlink’s India Ambitions Face Delay

The reported pause marks another hurdle in Starlink’s long-standing push to enter the Indian market. The company has previously faced regulatory setbacks after it accepted pre-orders from Indian customers in 2021 before securing the necessary licenses, eventually refunding users.

In recent months, Starlink has appeared to be moving closer to receiving operational approvals in India amid growing demand for satellite internet connectivity, especially in rural and remote areas where traditional broadband infrastructure remains limited.

However, the latest security review could delay the company’s India launch timeline as authorities weigh strategic and national security considerations.

Neither the Indian government nor Starlink has officially commented on the reported freeze in approvals so far.
