Biden wants Kamala Harris to solve the rampant border crisis but she’s not keen on cleaning up his mess

Last week, Vice President Kamala Harris was charged with leading the efforts to resolve migration at the southern border, where the country is experiencing a “humanitarian crisis” due to an influx of migrants.

Immigration has been one of the biggest issues for the Biden administration. The recklessness and the ineptitude displayed to reverse the border policies of the previous administration has engulfed the southern states into a full-blown crisis. Besides, this is a major issue and needs an immediate, quick and decisive response which the President should have addressed directly, but knowing Joe Biden’s capabilities, or lack of it, appointing Kamala Harris in charge was not a bad idea. But she seems to not care at all about the crisis.

Her immigration duties, which include coordinating diplomatic efforts with the Northern Triangle nations, are part of a wider pattern in which the administration has delegated major foreign policy responsibilities to her. She has spoken with world leaders such as Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, for example.

Harris has fielded media questions since the start of the administration and a week after Biden’s announcement, but has yet to hold a formal press conference. Meanwhile, the border crisis has captivated the nation’s attention, raising questions about national security and the overall integrity of the US immigration system.

When Biden first announced her appointment, he stated that she will be in charge of assisting migrants in returning to their homelands.

“So this new surge we’re dealing with now started with the last administration, but it’s our responsibility to deal with it humanely and to – and to stop what’s happening,” Biden said last Wednesday.

“And so, this increase has been consequential, but the vice president has agreed – among the multiple other things that I have her leading – and I appreciate it – agreed to lead our diplomatic effort and work with those nations to accept re- – the returnees, and enhance migration enforcement at their borders – at their borders.”

Later, the White House tried to argue that Harris wasn’t interested in the “border crisis,” but rather concentrated on fixing the “root causes – not the border.” Individuals who come into touch with US authorities at the southern border, as well as those who are returned while passing via other nations, are all considered returnees.

The huge influx of refugees has resulted in viral images of people crowded into close quarters amid coronavirus limits, raising concerns about two of Biden-Harris’ key attacks on Trump. During the vote, Biden chastised Trump for failing to take COVID-19 seriously and for allegedly torturing migrant children in cages.

The border crisis involves a wide range of issues and agencies across the federal government, especially those under the Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Health and Human Services.

Harris’s office said that she would be working closely with other members of the cabinet including the Secretary of State, the International Development Administrator and the Northern Triangle Special Envoy.

A few days ago, when Kamala was asked a valid question seeking to know whether she would be visiting the crisis-struck border, she laughed out loud, almost hysterically.

Having already laughed on being questioned about the situation at the border, Kamala Harris’s refusal to have hosted a press conference is not surprising at all. She does not regard immigration as a major issue. The southern border of the United States faces a crisis not known to the country in recent history. The Biden administration remains adamant to not term the unprecedented surge of immigrants on the border as a ‘crisis’ and Harris’s indifference does nothing more than to pile misery on the American citizens.
