Hong Kong is braving the new wave of covid-19 that is ripping through the city. There has been a sharp surge in the number of omicron cases and rising death cases to the level that the nation is facing shortages of coffins! More than 5000 have died in the last three months alone. But the experts are of the opinion that the actual number could be a lot more than what the official states.

The question comes, why such a huge number of deaths are reported despite the fact a major chunk of the city’s population is vaccinated with Chinese Sinovac? Can we say Sinovac and other Chinese vaccines like Sinopharm are ineffective?
Well, when vaccines are made in China, the same country which doesn’t share any data whatsoever with the world, these questions are bound to rise. According to a Chinese vaccine expert, the Sinopharm coronavirus vaccine is the most unsafe in the world and claimed it has 73 side effects. Also as per a preliminary analysis conducted by the Centre for Health Protection, almost 3% of people aged 80 or above jabbed with Sinovac died after getting the infection.

This trend of deaths should be a major concern for the Chinese authorities whose obsession with zero-covid policy is yet to recede. They still believe that containment through lockdowns is the best strategy to tackle the rising cases. But this is proving them wrong once again as Covid is grappling China, this time in a more taut way. Even Dr. Michael Osterholm, director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy, Minnesota recently said, “Beijing may not be able to use the same authoritarian approaches against omicron because the variant is unlike the others”.

Exporting deaths
Just focus on china’s vaccine map. It is currently exporting the Covid vaccines to 43 nations. From Mongolia to Bahrain to Seychelles, all these nations have seen the surge in Covid cases despite a high level of inoculations with Sinopharm. UAE, where Sinovac was majorly administered, is raising the question of its efficacy as it has also seen an increase in the number of deaths. Even during the trials in Peru, deaths were reported among the volunteers. Almost all the exporting nations have put these Chinese vaccines under scrutiny.
The World Health Organization’s (WHO) Strategic Advisory Group of Experts on Immunisation said recently that the vaccine “lacked data in older age groups and persons with co-morbidities”. Adding to the pain a Chinese National Health Commission (NHC) document showed that the Chinese COVID-19 vaccines had caused leukemia.
Well, no vaccines can never provide full-proof protection against these viruses. But repeated inefficacy of the Chinese vaccines enrolls into another league of bungle and elicit serious doubts regarding the accuracy of the whole process of development.
