In the garb of defending human rights and enabling democracy in Libya, Canada waged a war and destroyed the Libyan government. Well, the episode dates back to 2011 but its outcomes and disastrous repercussions are still witnessed.
Canada in the cloak of US-backed NATO waged a war on Libya from March to October 2011. It wasn’t just real-time devastation that took place in 2011 but the instability is still perpetuating. The war unleashed a decade of instability and violence in Libya as well as deteriorating social and economic indicators. Moreover, the country still hasn’t held any presidential elections. Long story short, the war had overthrown the country into a state of disorder.
Canada justified its act to be in defiance of human rights and to enable democracy in the country. But was this the truth? Of course, not. It was backed by the US-led NATO which is always eyeing the oil-rich countries.
Canada waged a war
Canadian general Charles Bouchard commanded the entire NATO operation, “personally signing off on every last preselected [bombing] target,” according to the Globe and Mail. The alliance dropped 20,000 bombs on almost 6,000 targets, including more than 400 government buildings or command centres. Dozens, probably hundreds, of civilians were killed in the strikes. NATO erroneously classified some civilian sites they struck as military targets.

The use of force was encouraged by Canadian officials throughout the conflict. When visiting Benghazi in June 2011, foreign minister John Baird encouraged the rebels’ National Transitional Council to continue fighting, according to briefing documents unearthed by the Ottawa Citizen. An April 2012 headline detailing the minister’s meeting with the rebels three months into a seven-month war stated, “Hawkish Baird encouraged Libyan rebels to keep up struggle.” In private, however, Baird “impressed upon the National Transitional Council the imperative of going forward militarily,” despite publicly calling for an end to the conflict.
Well, the Canadian officials just wanted Gaddafi to be overthrown out of power and made sure that no neighbouring country grants Gaddafi exile after the fall of Tripoli.
Libya in a post-Gaddafi era
With no legitimate government, Libya has become a breeding ground for the Islamist extremists in the post- Gaddafi era. The country has since been tied with various militia groups and terrorist organisations that control parts of Libya. It has since been reeling under domestic security concerns and is trying to combat the growth of ISIS and other terror outfits in the country, but all in vain.
Canada manufactured such a crisis that Libya is still not able to get over. Canada and the US tried to weaken the stronghold of Muammar Gaddafi in Libya for their own personal interests. Canada wanted to overthrow an anti-Islamist government while the US was aiming at the country’s abundant oil reserves. The US-backed alliance led by a Canadian commander waged a war that overturned the status quo of the country which created opportunities for Islamist extremists and terror outfits like ISIS to proliferate. These extremist groups even persuaded radical individuals to believe in and join their cause.

Gaddafi’s regime collapse back in 2011 was a significant event in Libya’s history. It subjected the citizens of the country to political turmoil and instability. The sorry state of Libya was all Canada’s creation and now it’s time to apologise for its misdeed.
