On May 4, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau promised to run in the next election at what is likely the last Liberal party convention before a vote and attacked his Conservative rival’s characterization of the country as broken.
“When the election comes, when Canadians need to make a consequential choice in this consequential moment, it will be the honor of my life to lead us through it, and continue building a better future,” Trudeau said.
Trudeau has promised to lead the Liberals into the next election, but not everyone in the party is thrilled about it. There’s a growing concern that a head-to-head battle between Trudeau and Poilevre would be like sending a knife to a gunfight, with the Conservatives coming out on top.
The ‘Liberal’ Fear

Freeland: The right candidate
This is no hidden fact: after Trudeau, only Freeland is the liberal party leader who has the most credibility. In 2022, Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland was the most preferred candidate to lead the Liberal Party.
According to the Nanos Research poll, 25% of Canadians believe Freeland would make the best Liberal Party leader, while only 18.4% would choose Trudeau.
Trudeau’s approval rating has been a bit of a rollercoaster lately, with Canadians deeply divided over his performance. And so, if Trudeau does end up losing his seat, only Chrystia could have a shot at Ottawa.
Although Trudeau and Freeland have been together for most of the crimes, Freeland has a clean slate.
Trudeau has faced a slew of criticism for a range of issues, from his controversial decision to ban oil production to his embrace of woke culture and alleged Chinese influence. Even the country’s struggling economy has been blamed on his policies.
Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland seems to have avoided much of the same scrutiny. Despite her prominent role in government and her dual position as Finance Minister and Deputy Prime Minister, she has managed to roam free of accusations.

The Women Card
As the Trudeau government faces increasing criticism, Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland has managed to remain relatively unscathed. Now may be the perfect time for her to step up and go on the offensive. By taking on Justin Trudeau and his policies, Freeland can both cool down the rising heat against the Liberal party and potentially win back disaffected voters who have turned to the Conservatives.
As a woman, Freeland also has the opportunity to play the “woman card,” which could help her attract more female voters. By positioning herself as a rebel who stands up for Canada, she can present herself as a strong and independent leader who is not afraid to take on the establishment. And by going after Trudeau, she can further establish herself as a champion for the people.
Ultimately, if Freeland can successfully navigate this political minefield, she could emerge as a strong contender to lead the Liberal Party into the next election and possibly save the dying Liberal Party, at least for four years.

It’s a tough pill to swallow, but the numbers don’t lie. If the Liberal Party wants to survive and thrive, they need to turn to Chrystia Freeland. With Justin Trudeau’s reputation taking hit after hit, there’s only so much more he can do before the party is irreparably damaged.
The alternative is grim. If the Liberals wait too long, they risk losing power to Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre, who seems poised to dominate Canadian politics for the foreseeable future. And if that happens, it may be decades before the Liberals have another chance to reclaim their place in Canadian politics.
So, it’s time for the Liberals to make a bold move. It’s time for Chrystia Freeland to step up and lead the party to victory. If anyone can save the Liberals from the brink of disaster, it’s her.
