Odessa is Almost in Putin’s Grasp Now

Zelensky's blind-eyed attitude towards South Ukraine is leaving Western allies worried about the Odesa port

Ukraine’s attempt at a counteroffensive to wrest control from Russian hands has turned into a showstopper, though not in the way the Ukrainian President had hoped.

Instead of regaining lost territories, the counteroffensive has led to a devastating daily toll of over 500 martyrs – a far cry from the anticipated success story. Even the town of Kupiansk, a focal point of the operation, has slipped further away.

But, Kyiv appears unfazed by these grim outcomes. Troops and resources continue to pour into the Eastern front, even though none of the strategies are working out. Moreover, this outpour comes at the expense of crucial Southern Territories.

Zaporizhzia, a city of strategic importance that could turn the tide of the war, is being overshadowed as the spotlight remains fixed elsewhere. The United States i.e. also an indirect participant of the Ukraine war has now voiced its concerns about Kyiv’s ignorance.

A Humble Plea

Reportedly, US officials have expressed disappointment at the current course of Ukraine and its potential lack of tangible gains. The US has asked for a more focused approach, urging Ukraine to channel its forces into the key axis of the counteroffensive in the south, rather than scattering them along a sprawling front.

Across the Atlantic, the British press has joined the chorus, suggesting that Ukraine needs to double down on efforts in the Zaporizhzia region because isolating such crucial cities can lead to serious irreversible outcomes.

Zaporizhzia’s significance can’t be overstated. This city, caught in the crosshairs, holds the potential to reshape the landscape of the war. Whoever controls it gains access to a series of dominos that could lead to Odessa, a port city that has become a prize in this high-stakes game.

Odessa in Sight?

For the unaware, this is the very same city where Ukrainian and Russian forces clashed fiercely for the crown jewel of nuclear plant, in a battle that reverberated globally.

Fears that Russia would attempt to capture the Odessa port grow as tensions rise; already, increased naval deployments and drone activity are causing more shipment devastation.

Russia’s dream of gaining control of Odessa would be a considerable victory, aligning with its aspirations for warm-water ports. With Crimea already in its grip and Sevastopol port secured, Odessa could be the final piece in Russia’s puzzle – and Ukraine’s potential downfall as a landlocked country.

Zelensky is leading Ukraine toward a wrenching sacrifice of its prized South, motivated by a risky gamble to save the struggling East. Neither the formidable shields of NATO nor the powerful gavel of the UN can be relied upon to step in and help Ukraine out of its dire situation. The somber truth depicts Ukraine’s current situation as one of isolation, with Putin enjoying blissfully in Odessa.
