A US senator has blocked the transfer of $75 million (£66 million) in aid citing human rights violations in the country. The aid was supposed to be paid by President Joe Biden’s administration after Egypt released 500 political prisoners, but it was subject to a waiver if necessary reforms were not implemented. But US senator Patrick Leahy, who heads the Senate Appropriations Committee, stressed Egypt needed to do more to address what he called the “deplorable” circumstances being faced by its political prisoners because thousands were still behind bars. Each year, the US allocates aid for Egypt totaling around $1.3 billion, most of it unconditional.

Egypt thrashed the West for not meeting its obligations

Wael Aboulmagd, the special envoy of Egypt to CoP27, which will take place next month, criticized wealthier nations for breaking a commitment to provide USD 100 billion (green assistance) annually to underdeveloped and disadvantaged countries by 2020.

At Cop 26, in Copenhagen, a commitment was made to cut down greenhouse gas emissions and address the impact of the climate issue on the most vulnerable nations. Aboulmagd emphasized that the $100 billion (green aid) objective has not been reached, the US and Europe are “responsible for where we are right now.” Speakers at a planning session in the DRC agreed with Aboulmagd’s worries.

Climate change is real

Cop 26 faced flak for not making any progress on climate spending. Along with not providing poor countries with the money it pledged in 2009, the West also prevented the establishment of a “loss and damage fund” to support smaller nations in times of natural disasters. Amina Mohammed, the deputy secretary general of the UN, stated that the inadequacy of climate funding from rich nations will be a top priority at Cop27.

Every person on the globe believes Climate Change is real. Everyone on earth is dealing with the effects of climate change in their daily life, regardless of their nationality, religion, ethnicity, or culture. The way we treat our surroundings affects our health and how we feel about ourselves; similarly, how we care about the environment reflects how we perceive our own health.

Despite this the whole world cannot leap together and reach the green energy requirements of the West, even the West is not able to meet its requirements. Every country has its own share of problems which vary from country to country and region to region. Major african countries are affected by flood, drought and other natural calamities. Some face man-made disasters like insurgency. Most of the countries face joblessness and need industrialisation in order to grow. On the other hand the West industrialized itself rapidly in the past and emitted the carbon and other pollutants to a scale which is unprecedented in human history.

Russia’s angle behind stopping the aid

In the month of June there was a shocking revelation in Egypt by a Russian state-owned company that it will be constructing Egypt’s first nuclear power plant. This perturbed the west over an ally becoming neutral or inclined towards Russia. Shortly after this development Russia’s President Vladimir Putin stated in his statement that Russia considers Egypt one of its most important partners in Africa and the Arab world. This again rattled the West and the whole world cannot leap together and reach the green energy requirements of the West, even the West is not able to meet its requirements.

Well it can be chalked out from these developments that even if Egypt is not a pro-Russia country, it is not its foe as well.

Biden’s dream project CoP27, which will be hosted by Egypt later in the year, had an agenda. The agenda would’ve been shoved into the throats of developing countries but the host punctured the agenda in the pre-Cop27 talks. Seeing this, Biden’s senator blocked the money to be sent to Egypt in the form of Aid.

Human Rights: An Epitome of Black Swan

Yet the reasons cited for blocking the aid were subjugation of human rights. The senator who blocked the aid thought that Egypt had to do much more in order to address human rights issue in the country. You see Human Rights as a reason is an obvious reason which America uses to intervene, propagate or alter any decision in the world. America has cited this reason because it cannot cite the underlying geopolitical conditions for stopping the aid. The Western Media can now also pick the propaganda and disseminate it in all directions. Liberal journalists can also brag about upliftment of Human Rights by the US and altogether the world will be a better place with Biden’s target being achieved.
