Syria Iran military partnership: The world has not remained unaware of the longstanding enmity between Iran and Israel. Their relationship has been marked by tension and unending rivalry, ingrained in geopolitical and ideological differences.

Iran views Israel as an occupying power and a staunch ally of its adversaries. On the other hand, Israel sees Iran as a threat due to its nuclear program and support for militant groups like Hezbollah. This rivalry has spurred proxy wars and instability, adding to the Middle East’s already fragile stability.

However, the story takes an interesting twist when we look at the relationship between Syria and Israel. There has been a startling change in recent years, providing some optimism for better relations between the two countries. This constructive shift has been facilitated by shared worries about regional stability, shared economic interests, and a determination to combat shared security challenges.

Through high-level diplomatic engagements, discreet intelligence cooperation, and limited cross-border exchanges, Israel and Syria have slowly paved the way for a new era of dialogue and understanding.

Israel attacked Syria

But just as things seemed to be heading in a positive direction, tensions between Israel and Syria have begun to resurface. A few weeks ago, the Israeli army attacked an unidentified aircraft that had entered its territory from Syria. The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) explained that the downed aircraft did not pose a threat at any stage, but the incident has raised concerns and left Damascus wondering about the nature of Israel’s attack.

The key to understanding this recent development lies in the newfound friendship between Syria and Iran. Iran, after a prolonged period, has restored diplomatic ties with Syria, and the cooperation between the two nations is expanding rapidly.

The Reason: Iran

Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi signed 15 cooperation agreements during his visit to Damascus, including a comprehensive strategic agreement to strengthen bilateral economic and security cooperation. The trip was praised by Raisi as a “turning point,” with an emphasis on the strengthening of bilateral economic, commercial, political, and security ties.

Notably, the Syria Iran military partnership agreements cover various sectors such as trade, oil and energy, engineering, housing, transportation, free zones, communications, technology, and even earthquake relief and pilgrimage to holy sites.

However, the most unexpected help came in the form of the military. Iran will reportedly contribute to Syria’s military’s reconstruction in the post-war period by exchanging experiences and offering training on various levels.

This suggests that the Syrian and Iranian militaries may soon conduct combined operations. Israel is therefore not particularly happy about Syria’s revived friendship with Iran. The two countries are fierce rivals, and Israel has been known to attack locations in Syria that it believes are connected to Iran.

In fact, Israeli strikes within Syrian territory have increased significantly, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

With Iran now strengthening its ties with Syria, Israel is bound to view it as a potential threat, making Syria a possible target for Israeli military actions.

The Syria Iran military partnership has added a new layer of complexity to an already intricate regional landscape.

While Syria’s relationship with Israel appeared to be on a positive trajectory, recent developments have reignited tensions and increased the risk of further hostilities.

It is unclear how Israel will react as the Syria-Iran alliance grows and what steps it might take to protect its security interests given the unfavorable appearance of the present developments. If things didn’t calm down, Syria and Israel might become involved in a fierce battle.
