UK Government Crisis Deepens: Over 100 Labour MPs Demand Keir Starmer’s Exit Amid Andy Burnham Challenge

The political landscape in the United Kingdom is facing renewed uncertainty as Prime Minister Keir Starmer comes under intense pressure from within his own party. More than 100 Labour MPs are reportedly urging Starmer to announce a timeline for his resignation, raising fears of a full-scale government crisis.

The internal rebellion within the Labour Party intensified following the recent Makerfield by-election victory of Andy Burnham, who secured 55% of the vote and is now widely expected to launch a leadership challenge.

The growing unrest has sparked concerns among senior Labour figures and political analysts that the party may be heading toward a major political breakdown at a critical moment for the UK.

Labour Leadership Crisis Reaches Boiling Point

Senior Labour peer Charles Falconer has openly questioned Starmer’s authority, warning that the current leadership uncertainty is “completely unmaintainable” for the country.

Speaking to the BBC, Falconer argued that Starmer’s weakened political standing stems from widespread expectations that Burnham will challenge for the leadership — and likely win.

“The reason he’s got no authority is because everybody assumes Andy Burnham is about to challenge,” Falconer said, urging Starmer not to prolong the inevitable.

According to reports from The Telegraph, at least 104 Labour MPs now want the prime minister to step down or set a clear resignation timetable.

Andy Burnham Emerges as the Main Contender

Burnham’s strong by-election performance has significantly boosted his political standing, making him the frontrunner in any potential Labour leadership contest.

Although Burnham has not officially declared his candidacy, insiders suggest preparations are underway.

Meanwhile, Starmer remains defiant. Reports indicate his supporters believe Burnham’s popularity could quickly fade under national scrutiny. The prime minister has also vowed to contest any leadership challenge.

Jeremy Corbyn Criticizes Labour’s Direction

Former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has warned that Labour’s crisis is rooted in policy failures rather than leadership alone.

Corbyn criticized the government over proposed welfare cuts, austerity measures, and restrictions on civil liberties, arguing that simply replacing Starmer would not solve the deeper problems facing the party.

His comments reflect growing frustration among Labour’s left wing, which believes the party has drifted away from its core values.

Could Britain Face Political Instability?

Political commentators warn that a bitter Labour leadership battle could destabilize the government and weaken Britain’s ability to address pressing domestic and international challenges.

Veteran political commentator Charles Moore described the possible Burnham-led challenge as a “palace coup” that risks dragging the country into further uncertainty.

With the UK economy under pressure and public dissatisfaction rising, the coming weeks could prove decisive for both Starmer’s future and Labour’s grip on power.

As tensions rise in Westminster, all eyes are now on whether Andy Burnham will make his move — and whether Keir Starmer can survive the biggest challenge of his premiership.
